For 20 years, Dove’s Real Beauty campaign has challenged narrow definitions of beauty. But in 2024, the battleground shifted: AI platforms were generating the same homogenous, unrealistic images that Dove had fought against in advertising. On the 20th anniversary of its Real Beauty Pledge, Dove launched Real Beauty Redefined for the AI Era to ensure inclusive representation wouldn’t be erased by algorithms. Through a pioneering partnership with Pinterest, Dove empowered women to co-create their own Real Beauty DNA—personalized video expressions of authentic beauty traits. Every interaction reshaped Pinterest’s algorithm, making diverse, authentic images more likely to surface in searches. This was not just an ad campaign; it was an intervention to retrain AI for the better, protecting the next generation from distorted digital ideals.
